Avi Buffalo at The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh 30/8/2010

Avi Buffalo from Long Beach, California were at one time a one piece – band founder Avigdor Zahner- Isenberg who then became a four piece and are currently a three piece comprising of Avi on guitar and vocals, Sheridan Riley on drums and the old man of the band Arin Fazio at an ancient 21 years old!!! on bass…
They took to the stage on the penultimate night of the Edinburgh festival to a packed Queen’s Hall in a support slot to The Low Anthem to deliver their album self titled album “Avi Buffalo” (out on Sub Pop records) in a set full of bright sunny melody filled songs but lyrics tinged with a sour edge with songs entitled “Five Little Sluts” and “Summer Cum” and the brilliant “What’s In It For Me”
These guys may be young but deliver their music with maturity beyond their youthful years and are tipped for mainstream success, this was evident by the enthusiasm of the polite but appreciative crowd which consisted of strange mix of American tourists, school kids, students and older music fans who didn’t quite demand an encore more like requesting a few more songs…weird.
Not quite sure if this was a music gig or a show from the arts festival !!

Album “Avi Buffalo” out now on Sub Pop Records

They say the best bands are made up of brothers. Humans, linked by a shared ancestry, their blood thicker than water.

Let’s look at the evidence: The Ramones, The Walker Brothers, The Righteous Brothers and The Fratellis – siblings against the world, making musical history. Of course, none of them were actually brothers, and such is the case with Colenso Parade, the latest in a long musical lineage of pretend brothers.

From their early beginnings in Omagh, to the long and winding road which led the band to be named after a street in Belfast, this band of (pretend) brothers have been perfecting their infectious brand of hummable indie-pop over a series of acclaimed gigs and releases over the last two years.

Last year’s debut EP, You and Me Against an Old Routine, received excellent coverage from the Northern Irish media, including AU Magazine and The Big List. The band has also enjoyed significant airplay across Irish radio including plays on BBC’s Radio 1. Throw in successful appearances at The Glasgowbury Festival and special guest to Richard Hawley at The Ulster Hall, as well as exclusive sessions and videos for Bandwidth Films, and it would be safe to say that 2009 was a very good year for the brothers (not related).

However, this brand new single Find Your Mother could be the hip new sound that will launch them into the hearts of the nation. Fusing a tight rhythmic bass and drums attack to jangling guitars and harmonies, it manages that difficult trick of sounding instantly familiar, yet utterly fresh.

In an overcrowded musical climate, one could ask the question, “Why do I need Colenso Parade in my life?” But one look at their cheerful faces, charming demeanour, and reasonable cleanliness, can only provoke one answer: “How have I lived this long WITHOUT them in my life!”

Colenso Parade - as close as brothers can possibly get, without actually being related.

Colenso Parade: Find Your Mother

Out now on i-tunes and from all good online retailers and record stores.

Sat 4 Sept: The Empire Music Hall (The Coronas)

Wed 11 Sept: Whelans, Dublin

Thurs 16 Sept: The Menagerie (Belfast Music Week)

Fri 1 Oct: Auntie Annie’s, Belfast (single launch)

Leftfield have announced their biggest UK Tour in over a decade. After a series of stunning headline performances at some of this year’s hottest festivals including Rockness, Benicassim, L.E.D and last weekend’s sell out Creamfields, Neil Barnes returns with a new live show that’s set to reverberate the length of the UK this autumn. Barnes will be joined by original vocalists Djum Djum, Earl 16 and Cheshire Cat for a tour that will demonstrate once again why Leftfield Live is one of the must-see live music experiences on the planet.

The tour which kicks off on Thursday 18th November will see Leftfield perform in Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, Liverpool, Bournemouth, Plymouth, Bristol and culminate in a homecoming show at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on Friday 3rd December.

Leftfield’ Neil Barnes comments: “The reception we received over the summer at the festivals was amazing. Now we can’t wait to get out there again this autumn and bring the full Leftfield Live experience to the rest of the country. Let the bass roar.”

The band trailblazed their unique sound in the early ‘90s and took John Lydon back to the top of the charts. The band whose debut album ‘Leftism’ became a modern classic, was also voted one of the greatest albums of all time by Q magazine. A band whose follow-up album ‘Rhythm & Stealth’ went to number 1, spawned the techno anthem ‘Phat Planet’, and that Guinness advert with the horses. Revealed as the loudest band EVER to play Brixton Academy, Leftfield’s show made such a seismic impact that it remains the benchmark for live electronic music to this day. Leftfield can take recognition for inspiring some of the world’s biggest dance acts, including The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and Underworld, and also Sasha, who acclaims Leftfield as “writing the commandments on electronic music”. Now Leftfield are back…

This is set to be one of the biggest, loudest, and most emotional tours of the year, taking dance music back to its roots with one of electronic music’s true originals.

LEFTFIELD LIVE 2010:

Following the recent announcement that Leftfield are to tour the UK after a successful summer spent playing Festivals across Europe, Neil Barnes has confirmed who will be joining him in front of the legendary Leftfield sound system. Original vocalists Djum Djum, Earl 16 and Cheshire Cat, all of whom played key roles in Leftfield’s classic albums ‘Leftism’ and ‘Rhythm & Stealth’, will be joining Neil for the shows. Completing the live line up will be Adam Wren (keyboards), Jess Mills (vocals) and Sebastian Beresford on drums,

Leading the dance music charge of the early ’90s, Leftfield carved a path for a raft of great artists including Underworld, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy. Their pioneering debut album ‘Leftism’ often tops ‘Best Dance Album’ polls, whilst their live shows are the stuff of legend. Leftfield’s live return is an opportunity for everyone to experience one of this country’s most influential dance artists.

Neil Barnes says: “The opportunity to perform the songs to a whole new audience with the original sound system and vocalists is an opportunity that I simply couldn’t turn down, The good will surrounding the live show has overwhelmed me, the expectation is tremendous. I simply can’t wait to blow everybody away, Literally.”

P.O.D. AND ALIEN ANT FARM SIGN ON FOR ‘NEVER AGAIN’ BENEFIT CONCERT REMEMBERING 17 YEAR-OLD MURDER VICTIM NORMA LOPEZ.

TICKETS ON SALE SEPTEMBER 3 FOR SEPTEMBER 18 CONCERT AT MORENO VALLEY COLLEGE IN MORENO VALLEY, CA.

‘NEVER AGAIN’ LINEUP ALSO INCLUDES BUTTERSCOTCH, ADAM LASHER BAND, PALOMA, CRUZ, THE RINGLEADER D.J. ACE AND MORE.

P.O.D., Alien Ant Farm, and Butterscotch are among the artists joining forces for the September 18 Never Again benefit concert in Southern California remembering 17 year-old murder victim Norma Lopez. The concert — which also features performances by Adam Lasher Band, Paloma, Cruz, The Ringleader D.J. Ace and a yet-to-be-announced special guest – runs from noon until 5pm on Saturday, September 18 at Moreno Valley College, with doors opening at 11am.

Tickets will be available for a $10 donation starting on September 3, with proceeds going to the Norma Lopez Benefit Concert Fund both to assist her family with funeral expenses and to contribute to the reward to help law enforcement find and catch her killer or killers. Norma Lopez went missing on July 15, 2010 after attending summer classes at Valley View High School and walking home via a popular neighborhood shortcut. Her body was discovered in a nearby field on July 20.

Norma’s disappearance and murder hit close to home for Alien Ant Farm, who hail from nearby Riverside. “My heart goes out to Norma, her family and friends. I have a daughter and can’t even imagine how Norma’s parents feel,” says Alien Ant Farm drummer Mike Cosgrove. “We have a lot of friends that went to Valley View High School through the years and have used that same shortcut. It’s tragic and frightening.”

Headliners P.O.D. echo that sentiment: “Our hearts go out to the Norma Lopez family. We are deeply saddened and outraged by what’s happened. When we heard about the benefit, we wanted to do our part and help.”

Gary Avila, VP of Artist Development at Tao Music Group, helped put together Never Again along with Tao Creative colleagues Nick Martinez, Dean Blagg, and Richard “Rimo” Moreno. Avila explains, “When I heard that Norma Lopez was missing and then her body was found a week later, it struck a chord in me. Being a parent, I knew that I had to do something to help prevent this from happening again. I mentioned doing a concert to my colleagues at Tao Music Group, they agreed right away, and we met with the mayor of Moreno Valley to get the ball rolling. The response from everyone, from bands to companies, has been amazing and I am so blessed to be a part of this special event.”

Norma’s sister Elizabeth Lopez says, “This concert that is being held to raise awareness and also in the remembrance of my little sister Norma Lopez brings such happiness and honor. Knowing that all the people involved in this project took the time to put all this together on such short notice and yet have never met my sister shows me how much love there really is out in this world. My family and I want to thank you all.”

About the artists performing at the Never Again benefit concert:

With multiple Grammy nominations and multi-platinum sales, P.O.D. draws a dedicated and diverse crowd – from mainstream metal and hard rock enthusiasts, to Latin rock fans to Christian rock devotees – with an equally diverse fusion of rock, funk, reggae, hardcore, and other influences. Their most recent release, 2008’s When Angels and Serpents Dance , marked the return of original guitarist Marcos Curiel.

When offbeat and often outrageous humor meet a hybrid of hard rock influences and “full-blooded melodies” that are “relentlessly addictive” according to All Music Guide, the result is Alien Ant Farm. After vaulting to fame with their platinum-selling ANThology, and a #1 radio hit with their tongue-in-cheek cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,”AAF is back with its original lineup. The Riverside, CA quartet is currently writing songs for their fifth studio album.

Butterscotch is a musical Swiss Army knife – a multi-instrument musician (including piano, flute, saxophone, bass and guitar), singer, songwriter, and even a champion beatboxer. In addition to claiming titles as both the first International World Female Beatbox Champion and the West Coast Beatbox Champion for both genders, she has performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tyra Banks Show, and as a finalist on America’s Got Talent. She has collaborated with artists across the musical spectrum – from Mike Patton to jazz bass trio S.M.V. (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten). Look for a new CD from Butterscotch in the near future.

http://butterscotchmusic.com/

Adam Lasher Band’s influences and lineage are both evident in the Los Angeles quartet’s soul-rock sound. Singer/guitarist Adam Lasher – whose uncle is the legendary Carlos Santana – leads the way with expressive fretwork, anchored by a tight groove and accented by timeless keyboard and organ sounds.

http://www.myspace.com/adamlasherband

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Paloma is of both Mexican and Cuban descent, and has danced professionally since the age of 10. Her self-titled debut album due out later this year draws on dance, pop, R&B and Latin influences.

http://www.myspace.com/Palomaatmyspace

L.A.-based by way of Sao Paulo, Brazil, Cruz has a soulful sound with a modern edge. After working with Grammy-winning engineer/producer Jay Baumgardner, the band signed with Baumgardner’s label and management company. The band has been working on a new release at NRG Studios in North Hollywood.

Hot on the heels from a fantastic performance at this years Glastonbury, Sandi Thom announces further tour dates in autumn. Following on from the release of ‘Gold Dust’ in July, and a string of summer festival shows, the million-selling Scottish troubadour will tour across the UK, visiting Swindon, Leicester, Cardiff, Sheffield and Liverpool amongst others.

Released as a download only single on July 19th, ‘Gold Dust’ is a double A-side featuring a reworking of the single entitled “Gold Dust (Smoking Gun Remix)” plus a Sandi and Joe Bonamassa’s cover of the blues classic “I Need Your Love So Bad”.

Written by Sandi and Jake Field, ‘Gold Dust’ is inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s Black Magic Woman and tells the story of love and regret. Filled with beautifully seductive yet poetically sad lyrics, Sandi bills this song as the most evocative on the album and it’s not hard to see why.

The original of ‘Gold Dust’ is from the album “Merchants & Thieves”, which was released in May and reached No.1 in the UK iTunes Blues Chart and the top 5 of the same chart in the U.S. The album showcases a new sound from Sandi Thom, bringing to light her passion for blues and country folk. The album brilliantly reflects her influences in these genres as well as retaining her innate feeling for a powerful melody and a trenchant lyric. Sandi also debut’s her lead guitar skills throughout the album and even had the privilege of Farida Guitars producing a signature model acoustic guitar for her. Their SF-55 CE is now known as the Farida Sandi Thom. What an honor!

‘Merchants & Thieves’ also boasts collaboration with the blues legend Joe Bonamassa on ‘This Ol World’, which was the 1st single to be released from the album. There really is no better endorsement than his presence on the album, which Sandi called a “watershed moment” and is as lithe and lively a piece of contemporary blues as you’ll hear all year.

Catch Sandi live on tour across the UK at the following dates:

Amy Macdonald was the headline act on the Saturday night of the Belladrum Festival in Aberdeen. 07/08/2010

She played through her barrage of hits including; This is the life, Mr Rock and roll, and Dont tell me that it’s over. As well as treating the crowd to a couple of new songs from her upcoming album. Her originality shining through, and her stage presence kept every eye in the crowd on her.

The sheer quality of her voice was evident from the first note of the first song, through the final note of the last. There is a reason her songs are so popular, and i now know firsthand why she is reviewed so well for her live music also.

Every song was belted out with the confidence of a veteran performer, and sounded as good if not better than the studio recorded versions of the songs.
